Job Information

Open to the general public and any current Municipality of Anchorage Employee.

This position is represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1547 (Technicians) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local 1547 (Technicians).

DEPARTMENT: Public Transportation

HOURS OF WORK: Shifts Vary - schedules based on seniority: 40 hours per week within Monday through Sunday

LOCATION: 3701 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue

Example of Duties

This is an advanced level technician (mechanic) performing independent inspection, diagnosis and repairs, scheduled and unscheduled, of powertrain, interfaced electronic controls and electrical systems, heating and ventilation systems, electronic fareboxes, anti-lock/traction control air brake systems, suspension and hydraulic systems, and major and minor overhauls critical to preserving the safety and/or integrity of the Public Transportation Department buses and other vehicles and equipment. Perform field repairs and vehicle recovery. Support, mentor, and share knowledge while working constructively with other personnel. Use safe methods to complete task efficiently and safely.

Ability to rebuild pumps, alternators, torque arms and electrical components. Perform other related duties as assigned. Works with minimal guidance and supervision. Strong ability to troubleshoot, accurately diagnose, and identify component/part failure. Experienced with powertrain rebuilds, including motors, transmissions, and differentials. Ability to rebuild components including alternators, pumps, and electrical devices.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and completion of an approved journeyman mechanic apprenticeship program and four (4) years of automotive, construction equipment, transit bus, and truck maintenance and repair experience.

OR

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and five (5) years of automotive, construction equipment, transit bus, and truck maintenance and repair experience.

Must possess the following:

  • At time of application - Valid driver's license - Note: Current valid driver's license MUST be attached to the application in order to be considered.

  • At time of hire - Valid State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction. Applicants with a Restriction of "N-No Class A and B Passenger Vehicle" and Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible.

  • OR

  • At time of application - Valid driver's license - Note: Current valid driver's license MUST be attached to the application in order to be considered.

  • At time of hire - Valid State of Alaska driver's license & State of Alaska Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP).

  • Within 120 days – must obtain a valid State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction. Applicants with a Restriction of "N-No Class A and B Passenger Vehicle" and Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible.

  • Preferences:

  • Journeyman Mechanic with Cummins and/or Allison powertrain experience.

  • Successful completion of classroom or online training in the diagnosis and/or troubleshooting of Cummins, or Allison powertrain components.

  • Experience with the operation of computers and use of Allison and/or Cummins software to diagnose and troubleshoot powertrain issues.

  • Experience with reading and interpreting electrical schematics for commercial vehicles.

As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a medical physical and functional capacity examination.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Valid State of Alaska driver's license and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska driver's license was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. The processing fee(s) are the responsibility of the selected applicant.

All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

Military Service Interview Preference:

Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
