Johns Hopkins University Full-Time Clinical Instructor (non-tenure)- Psychiatric Mental Health, MSN (Entry into Nursing) Program in Baltimore, Maryland

Position Description :

The Clinical Instructor is responsible for teaching primarily in the clinical and laboratory /simulation settings for students in the MSN (Entry into Practice) program. This position reports directly to the Associate Director for Clinical Practice in the MSN (Entry into Nursing (second line supervision). This is an onsite position, and candidates must be able to travel to the SON and clinical facilities in the Baltimore-Washington area.

Responsibilities :

TEACHING

  • A primary responsibility is the direct supervision and instruction of MSN (Entry into Nursing) students in clinical rotations and in simulation/lab settings to support competency development.

  • Foster a supportive learning environment conducive to student success through me ntorship, guidance, and constructive feedback to enhance their clinical skills, critical thinking abilities, and professional role development .

  • Maintain clinical competency and knowledge of current evidence in specialty area

  • Appl y principles of adult learning to teaching practice

  • Works under the direction of the Theory Course Coordinator when serving as Clinical Course Coordinator to ensure integration of the course's theory and clinical content.

  • Work un der the direction of the Clinical /Lab Course Coordinator when leading a clinical or laboratory group.

  • Attend course planning meetings Complete all SON and site compliance. Ensure that all students in the assigned clinical group have completed and submitted compliance requirements for the assigned clinical site.

  • Follow SON policy for student incidents. Work collaboratively with nurse managers, staff nurses, and other representatives of the clinical units assigned.

  • Evaluate summative student performance as per course syllabus . This includes documentation in learning man a gement systems and other systems as directed ( ie EXXAT). Other expectations include formative evaluation ( ie m eet with students as requested or other necessary meetings to address student performance concerns ) .

  • Notif y the Clinical Course Coordinator promptly of any student concerns to develop a rem ediation and follow-up plan.

  • All concerns should include c ommunicat ion via writing with students, Course Coordinator, Associate Director for Clinical Practice, MSN (Entry into Nursing) Program, relevant Program Director, and student's academic advisor if the student is not successfully meeting course objectives

  • Provide timely feedback to students on their clinical/lab/course progress.

  • Orient, mentor and evaluate part-time clinical instructors in their teaching role if serving as a Clinical Course Coordinator.

  • Take on a clinical group for an absent clinical instructor if serving in the Clinical Course Coordinator role.

  • Communicate concerns about non-academic student issues to the Associate Dean for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs

  • If participating as a lecturer, utilize innovative teaching methodologies, technology-enhanced learning strategies, and simulation-based experiences to facilitate student learning and achievement of program outcomes.

    SERVICE

    Participate in all open houses, a ccepted student days, orientation, degree completion ceremonies , and graduations

  • Serve on departmental and school committees as assigned by the Associate Director for Clinical Practice , MSN (Entry into Nursing) Program.

  • Participate in professional activities , such as membership in a professional organization associated with the clinical instructor's clinical practice specialty.

    PRACTICE

  • Develop a plan annually with the Associate Director for Clinical Practice, MSN (Entry into Nursing) Program in collaboration with the MSN (Entry into Nursing) Program Director to maintain the clinical competency required to meet SON teaching needs.

    Current licensure as a registered nurse in good standing in Maryland

  • Doctoral degree in nursing

  • Minimum of 2 years of c linical nursing experience in psychiatric mental health

  • Experience in a clinical /didactic teaching role

  • Excellent organizational, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to effectively manage details and problem-solve in a complex environment

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so at Johns Hopkins University SON

    PREFERRED :

    Experience in higher education , including teaching, simulation instruction, accreditation, program review, or assessment .
