Kodiak Community Health Center Phlebotomy Technician - Full time in Kodiak, Alaska

POSITION SUMMARY:

Functions as part of the KCHC multidisciplinary healthcare team in providing care to patients. Performs direct patient care activities within the scope of practice of a Phlebotomist. The Phlebotomist serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving specimens; preparing specimens for laboratory testing; and performing screening procedures.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Acts as a member of the KCHC Healthcare Team in the provision of health services to individuals, families, and/or their communities. Works collaboratively with patients and their caregivers to the extent preferred by each patient as well as with other members of the KCHC Healthcare Team to accomplish shared goals within and across settings to achieve coordinated, high-quality care.

  1. Performs venipuncture on infants, pediatrics, and adult patients for lab collection purposes.
  2. Performs laboratory tests that are ordered by KCHC medical providers.
  3. Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
  4. Conduct laboratory diagnostics tests accurately. Enters results into the medical record via Epic promptly. Critical values are reported directly to the KCHC providers or KCHC Registered Nurse. Follow the standard operating procedure.
  5. Completes and documents quality control procedures. Communicate with and consult as necessary with the Lab Manager or designee to remedy an issue if a lab procedure shows inaccuracy.
  6. Completes daily equipment checks. Consult with the Lab Manager or designee for equipment malfunctions.
  7. Handles all biological materials safely by following standard precautions. Obtains specimens in a safe manner, taking all precautions deemed necessary by KCHC Clinical Policies and Procedures, KCHC Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures, and the various regulatory agencies.
  8. Assures that accurate patient charges are generated for laboratory services. Communicate with and consult, as necessary, with the Lab Manager or designee if inaccuracies are noted.
  9. Must demonstrate ongoing competency to perform clinical lab procedures within the KCHC Laboratory.
  10. Keeps the Lab Manager or designee of departmental needs and concerns as they arise.
  11. Performs other related duties, as assigned, that support the overall mission and vision of KCHC.
Qualifications

ESSENTIAL JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • High school diploma/GED required.

Experience:

  • Previous Phlebotomist preferred. Will train onsite.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Phlebotomist certification preferred. Current CPR certification is required and must be maintained thereafter. KCHC will assist in getting CPR certified.

  • Ability and willingness to carry out responsibilities under the organization's policies and applicable laws.
