Science Systems and Applications, Inc. Spatial and Geometric Instrument Calibration Scientist in Lanham, Maryland

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a Remote Sensing Calibration Scientist to work on a NASA Calibration and Validation Team at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

The successful candidate will take a lead role in the spatial and geometric calibration performance activities for current and new satellite missions. Work will be performed in conjunction with project calibration and validation leads to independently assessing optical sensors product performance and support associated activities within a calval team with members external to NASA. New mission calibration activities will begin prelaunch and extend on-orbit. In addition to existing tools, the candidate will also develop tools to support science products validation using appropriate methodologies to assess and improve environmental data products quality. The position requires frequent interactions with users from the scientific and engineering community to investigate instrument performance and data products issues.

Required Qualifications:

  • MSc. or higher in remote sensing, physics, space/environmental science, or comparable field of study and at least 4 years of related experience

  • Demonstrated spatial and geometric calibration knowledge or experience with optical (visible, near-infrared, thermal emissive) remote sensing data product evaluation and validation, particularly with regards to the Landsat 8 and 9 instruments.

  • Demonstrated experience with analysis software such as Python, IDL, MATLAB, etc.

  • Capable of working independently and in coordination within a diversely skilled team

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary, as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and oral presentations made at major science conferences.

  • US Citizenship or Permanent Residency required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with HDF data formats

  • Experience with scientific analysis and visualization of environmental data products.

  • Experience with the spatial and geometric characterization and calibration of remote sensing systems from prelaunch integration and testing, throughout postlaunch operations

The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
