Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District (MSBSD) Mental and Behavioral Health Coordinator in Palmer, Alaska

Class Summary:

The Mental and Behavioral Health Coordinator provides prevention and intervention across the district to promote and support the mental health needs of all students. They will collaborate with families and consult with staff to improve student success while supporting the district policies surrounding its mission, vision, and goals. The Mental and Behavioral Health Coordinator will work with staff, students, parents, and community members in a variety of settings and capacities to support social emotional growth, behavioral health, crisis intervention, and mental health support and advocacy. They will also provide integral support to student achievement and success. This position will require travel between school sites and the community.

Required Qualifications: Masters Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or health related field. Ability to travel between school site and the community as needed. Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Essential Functions of the Position: Train and assist staff in the implementation of policies and procedures surrounding trauma and abuse. Participate as a member of the school and district crisis trauma response teams. Facilitate activities or educational opportunities across the district related to processing trauma, enhancing coping skills, maintaining healthy relationships, domestic violence, mental health, and substance use. Provide interventions to improve family functioning and relationship enhancement, promote communication and social interaction, and parenting education. Support the implementation and facilitation of curriculum regarding the Alaska Safe Childrens Act and suicide awareness, prevention, and postvention. Bridge cultural knowledge and promote social and emotional learning in the classroom and across the district. Consult and collaborate with community agencies, organizations, and interdisciplinary teams to maximize educational and social emotional opportunities for students and families. Participate in and conduct district level staff meetings, in-service activities, staff development/special programs, school improvement teams and planning committees as appropriate to the assignment. Follow federal laws, state law, school board policies and professional standards. Other duties as assigned.

Skills: Experience in crisis response and intervention. Strong knowledge of behavior management strategies, trauma, mental health, and substance use. Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents. Ability to train others to apply effective behavior management techniques. Ability to provide consultation and education to schools about mental health topics. Ability to provide evidenced based interventions across the district. Ability to provide culturally relevant and competent support, advocacy, and education. Knowledge of evidenced-based treatment practices. Understand and supports diversity and cultural competence.
