Disney Entertainment Projects Editor, Interactive Storytelling – National Geographic in Washington, District Of Columbia

National Geographic is looking for a Projects Editor to join the Interactive Storytelling team. The Projects Editor will help conceptualize and lead interactive projects for publication and promotion across our website and off-platform channels, including social media and mobile app. The person in this role will work across National Geographic’s verticals to shape visual narratives and digital experiences, collaborating with our award-winning team of developers, UX designers, cartographers, illustrators and photographers. This role requires a team player with excellent project management, communication and creative facilitation skills. This is player/coach role, where you’ll have ownership over shaping story ideas while also being able to get hands on in building out projects.

What You Will Do

  • Identify and pitch visual story ideas and develop clear roadmaps for cross-departmental project teams.

  • Partner with other interactive editors, developers and graphics editors to execute visual and interactive projects

  • A key part of this role will be acting as a project lead, coordinating with the project team key stakeholders across the digital strategy and Product & Tech teams, ensuring good communication across all parties and bringing a sharp visual storytelling lens to each project.

  • Collaborate with the Design, Cartography, Graphics, Video and Photography teams to refine standards and best practices for storytelling forms including data visualizations, games, long-form visual narratives, photo features, and other interactive experiences.

  • Help manage a technical and design roadmap to templatize our most successful experiments and storytelling patterns, working closely with Product & Technology partners to align with CMS development.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum 6 years of experience conceptualizing and creating interactive digital content experiences

  • You have solid visual journalism experience gained within a newsroom or editorial setting.

  • You have demonstrated strong project management skills, either by leading large multi-stakeholder projects and/or exhibiting a leadership role on a major interactive project from ideation to delivery.

  • You understand the needs of a digital audience, user experience design, and are always asking: “how will I engage the audience”?

  • Demonstrated ability to implement sustainable processes that integrate successfully with other teams’ workflows

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide variety of people in matrixed conditions across numerous departments, with colleagues outside Editorial, in a context of organizational change.

  • You are an excellent communicator and feel as comfortable walking through a story pitch with editors as you do coaching a developer on an interactive interface.

Preferred Qualifications

  • We’re flexible on your exact skillset as long as you bring curiosity and willingness to learn. But you will ideally have some combination of editing experience, UX design (Figma, Adobe XD, etc), data analysis, and development and visualization skills (HTML, CSS, Javascript and JQuery, d3, three.js or other visualization libraries).

  • Familiarity with product management and agile development methodology.

  • Familiarity with data analytics and reporting tools (Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics, etc.)

Education

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
